Residents interested in learning more about the history of El Paso are invited to attend a special community lecture exploring the city’s historic neighborhoods on Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m.

Hosted by the El Paso Public Libraries, the free event will take participants on a journey through the neighborhoods that helped shape El Paso’s unique cultural identity.

Exploring El Paso’s Historic Communities

El Paso’s neighborhoods reflect a rich blend of Mexican, Spanish, and American influences, highlighting the city’s evolution from a frontier settlement into a vibrant border community. The lecture will explore several of the city’s most historically significant areas, including:

  • Chihuahuita – One of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, known for its deep Mexican-American heritage
  • Sunset Heights Historic District – A neighborhood filled with historic homes and architecture from the late 1800s and early 1900s
  • Segundo Barrio – Often called the “Ellis Island of the Southwest,” rich in cultural history and community traditions
  • Austin Terrace Historic District – Known for its planned residential design and proximity to scenic views of the Franklin Mountains
  • Magoffin Historic District – A historic district preserving early architecture and stories from El Paso’s frontier days

Community Connection Through History

Organizers say the lecture offers an opportunity for residents to connect with neighbors, explore the city’s roots, and celebrate the diverse history that defines El Paso today.

The event is part of the library’s ongoing community programs designed to promote education, cultural awareness, and civic pride.

The lecture is free and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to come ready to discover the stories hidden within El Paso’s historic neighborhoods.
