The Texas Transportation Commission approved $2,813,000 in Transportation Alternatives funding for the City of Socorro’s Rio Vista Road Complete Streets Feasibility Study.
The funding will support community engagement, planning, engineering and design for pedestrian, bicyclist and ADA-user infrastructure along a 3.15-mile segment of Rio Vista Road and Buford Road, from Parker Street to Socorro Road.
The corridor is near several local K-12 schools and experiences high traffic volumes and congestion during peak hours. The project will examine options including accessible sidewalks, bike lanes, shared-use paths and other safety measures for people walking or biking in the area.
The study will include feasibility analysis, community engagement, benefit-cost analysis and preliminary design, including 30% PS&E activities, to prepare for potential construction funding. The corridor connects K-12 public schools, a community center, municipal courts and historic sites in a historically underserved area.
The Transportation Alternatives Program supports planning and construction projects that improve safety and mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists and provide alternatives to motor vehicle travel. The commission approved funding for 73 projects on Nov. 13, 2025, following a competitive call that drew more than $988 million in federal funding requests from 226 eligible applications statewide.
