Davenport Elementary School won the 2026 CISD Pozole Champion title at Canutillo ISD’s second annual Pozole Cook-Off. Canutillo Elementary earned the Fan Favorite Award.

Davenport Elementary School earned the title of 2026 CISD Pozole Champion during Canutillo Independent School District’s second annual Pozole Cook-Off on Thursday, Oct. 22, at Canutillo High School.

The competition brought together cafeteria teams from all 10 CISD campuses. Each team prepared its own version of pozole, a traditional Mexican stew, for evaluation by a panel of judges.

Judges considered taste, aroma, texture and appearance before selecting Davenport Elementary’s kitchen crew as the overall champion.

Canutillo Elementary School also received recognition, earning the Fan Favorite Award after receiving the most support from the audience.

The cook-off celebrated the culinary talents of CISD Child Nutrition Services employees, who prepare and serve thousands of meals to Canutillo students each school day.

“Food is such an important part of our culture and our community, and events like this remind us that our cafeteria employees bring much more than nutritious meals to our schools,” Superintendent Dr. Josue Borrego said. “They bring passion, tradition and a sense of family to everything they do. We are proud to celebrate their talents and recognize the important role they play in the lives of our students.”

Marco Macias, director of CISD Child Nutrition Services, said the competition highlights the creativity, cooking skills and family traditions that cafeteria employees bring to their kitchens.

“Our cafeteria teams are incredibly talented, and this competition gives them a chance to show off the cooking skills and family traditions they bring to their kitchens,” Macias said. “They take tremendous pride in the food they prepare for our students every day. This is a fun way to recognize their hard work, celebrate our culture and build camaraderie among our schools.”

Davenport Elementary will hold the trophy and bragging rights until next year’s competition.
