El Paso Community College’s Sociology Department collected more than 150 donated items during a community drive supporting the El Paso Center for Children.

The Donation Drive was held October 15 at EPCC’s Valle Verde campus in honor of El Paso Giving Day. Organized by EPCC Sociology instructor Yvette Navarro, the effort gathered paper goods, blankets, backpacks, cleaning supplies and socks for the center.

The El Paso Center for Children provides services throughout the community to youth of all ages, parents, families and victims of crime. Every service offered by the center is free, and the organization relies on grants and donations to meet community needs.

“As sociologists, we feel it’s essential to support vulnerable populations and commit ourselves to community action,” Navarro said. “We are profoundly grateful for the generosity shown by our students, faculty, and staff at EPCC. Financially, times are tough, so it feels extra meaningful to get this level of support and willingness to give back.”

EPCC Sociology Coordinator Stacy Mayo and sociology faculty members planned and promoted the drive and provided student volunteers to collect the donations. Faculty volunteers included Roderick Callaway, Angelique Maes and Derrick Starr.
