El Paso Community College’s Student Parent Resource Center and Center for Students with Disabilities hosted a Sensory-Friendly Trunk or Treat event that welcomed more than 2,000 children and adults with disabilities on Oct. 17 at the EPCC Valle Verde Campus.
The free event was organized in partnership with The Arc of El Paso, Dee’s Big Adventure and Vision for El Paso. It gave families and children a safe, welcoming environment to enjoy Halloween with sensory-friendly activities and support.
Decorated vehicles offered candy and treats, while the Zen Zone inside the AST 150 Flexitorium provided a quieter area for activities. Created in collaboration with Mike Dee’s Big Adventure, the space included puzzles, games, coloring activities and pumpkin painting. The organization also provided sensory-friendly games designed to encourage creativity and engagement.
EPCC departments set up informational tables in the Flexitorium, where they shared resources, promoted college programs and distributed treats to visitors. Community participants decorated their vehicles and handed out bags of candy.
Alejandra Mendoza, assistant director of the EPCC Center for Students with Disabilities, said the event helped children who need additional support feel that they belong. John Estrada, manager of the EPCC Student Parent Resource Center, described the gathering as an inclusive space where every child could enjoy Halloween.
The event also included participation from the EPCC Student Nurses Association. Mia Martinez, the association’s president, said the group was glad to support the community and bring smiles to children.
